What Vegans Eat – Day 518: Special Travel Edition

Breakfast: Traveling to Chicago on a red eye flight for a meeting, Gary had sent me off with a bag of goodies: Sprouted Corn Tortillas with Melted Chao Cheese, Baked Lemon Tofu and Mini Baked Sweet Potatoes. I ate the tortillas early in the morning, while in flight. Towards the end of the flight the Baked Tofu was devoured. When I arrived at O’Hare in the morning I was so happy to find Argo Tea!

They have a wonderful collection of loose teas, some of my favorites, like Maté Latte.

I marveled at the pots of different teas brewing.

My Maté Latte with Coconut Milk was a bit sweet, a treat, and I learned later they add sugar to the more popular teas that are pre-brewed.

Lunch: After checking into the hotel I was a little hungry. I was happy to have the Baked Sweet Potatoes in my suitcase. The hotel also had a big jug in the lobby of the Arnold Palmer drink, Ice Tea with Lemonade. I downed a couple of glasses and went out on an adventure. The hotel was in an industrial park near the airport and I wanted to hunt for clean food. I found a grocery store 1.9 miles away and started walking. After 0.6 miles I got to an intersection and needed to cross the street and make a left turn. There were no crosswalks and a lot of traffic. I was not going that way. I walked all the way back in the other direction to the hotel and there I found a cross walk to get to the other side of the street. I began all over again in the direction of the grocery store. Making the left turn that I couldn’t earlier led me in between the Catherine Chevalier Woods and Schiller Woods North. Walking on the road peering into the woods and seeing the brooks and streams was lovely. The road, filled with noisy traffic was not so lovely. I crossed the Des Plaines River on the way. I arrived at my destination, the Jewel-Osco grocery store in a typical American strip mall. I was delighted to find organic foods at reasonable prices. I loaded up my back pack and made the journey home to the hotel.

Dinner: More tired than hungry, I nibbled on some grapes and cherries. Here is what I purchased which will fuel me the next day: Mixed Greens and Spinach, Peanut Butter, Celery, Cherries, Blueberries, Strawberries and Suja Uber Greens Juice with cucumber, celery, grapefruit, green chard, green leaf lettuce, lemon, kale, spinach, parsley, peppermint tea & spearmint tea.
