2023 HIGHLIGHTS FROM IT’S ALL ABOUT FOOD, THE REAL PODCAST
You think of yourself as a kind, compassionate person. You want to buy the best foods for yourself and your family, right? But, are you? Is it possible to buy and/or consume any animal products where the animals have been treated humanely? WHAT DOES HUMANE REALLY MEAN? Do you think labels like cage-free, grass-fed, and organic are synonymous with cruelty-free? To find out more listen to my interview with Hope Bohanec, the editor of The Humane Hoax.
Do you know Vesanto Melina MS, RD and Brenda Davis, RD? I adore them both! When it comes to nutrition their books are the best resources. Now they have coauthored a new book Plant-Powered Protein. It covers Nutritional Essentials and Dietary Guidelines for All Ages. Plus, Brenda’s son, Cory Davis, gives us all the reasons why choosing plant protein is best for the environment. Since the topic was so important we dedicated two podcasts on it, starting with Vesanto Melina. At 81 years young, she is vibrant and energetic. Find out how you can look and feel your best, at any age.
Sometimes we have to talk about manure, especially why it might not be the best thing to be putting on our food crops. Listen to my interview with Jimmy Videle to learn and discover why VEGANIC is the best way to grow our food. I learned so much from reading The Veganic Grower’s Handbook.
Yerba Mate! Do you drink it? Have you tried it? I drink many teas, and Yerba Mate is part of my tea collection. I have enjoyed it for years, but never knew its culture or it’s history until I read Yerba Mate, The Drink That Shaped a Nation. Yerba Mate’s storied history spans 500 years and includes themes involving colonists, race, culture, missionaries, capitalists, social practice. As a result of reading this book, I am enjoying Yerba Mate even more! Find out about Yerba Mate from the author Julia J. S. Sarreal in this podcast.
I read a lot of nonfiction books about food and the environment. Very often, the ones that I think are excellent are often unfortunately about unsettling subjects. Toxic Exposure, The True Story Behind the Monsanto Trials and the Search for Justice is one of those books. Even though I knew the outcome, that Monsanto would lose big in the three trials discussed in the book, because I had read about them in the news, I could still not believe the callousness of the Monsanto lawyers and their expert medical witnesses as they lied and used poorly executed studies on glyphosate to convince the jury that this toxic, cancer-causing chemical was safe and in front of the patients who were suffering from lymphoma due to exposure to Roundup Ready herbicides (which contain glyphosate). Listen to my interview with Dr. Chadhi Nabhan and get a taste for what the book is about. I recommend reading this book. I also recommend NEVER using any Roundup Ready herbicides (which I call biocides). I also recommend eating only organic food. It’s the best way to avoid, as much as possible, cancer-causing, toxic, glyphosate residues in our food. And after speaking with Zen Honeycutt for a second time on It’s All About Food I have to stress the value of eating 100% organic food. I encourage you to listen to my conversation with Zen Honeycutt to hear more about our contaminated food supply, how it is poisoning Americans, especially children, and what we can do about it.
Occasionally, it happens. A piece of art get through to your soul. Has it ever happened to you? It could be a film, a painting, a poem. How about a graphic novel? Mostly illustrations, few words, but the story is complex, deep, heartfelt. This is SALT, A Confessional Animal Liberation Narrative by Coyote Jacobs. I was surprised at how it moved me. I also enjoyed speaking with the artist and author of SALT, Coyote Jacobs.
Such an honor and so much fun to celebrate the Vegan Street 25th anniversary with the founders John Beske and Marla Rose. They are two of the most hardworking people I know, passionate about the mission and oh so good at everything they do! Please listen to this podcast episode and be part of the celebration!
I love, love, love the new cookbook BReD, filled with skill and craft and helpful photos, a rarity these days! The first section on sourdough bread is thorough, a master class in bread making. The bonus is the rest of the book, with gluten-free breads, savory dips, and yummy desserts. If you enjoy baking, you will love my conversation with the masters, Ed and Natasha Tatton as they discuss bread making, recipe creations and running their organic sourdough bakery and coffee shop, BReD.
Do you ever think about the rights you have as a human? It’s easy not to think about them until they are taken away. Or perhaps you are thinking about them constantly if others have privileges that you don’t have. The UN has created the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Have your ever read them? I recommend it. We dedicated two podcasts on the subject, talking about Vegan Discrimination Cases. Whether you are vegan or not, I recommend tuning in. You will get a sense of how precious all our rights are as humans, how brave some people are to fight for freedoms, and the lawyers who work hard to defend them.
It’s always a pleasure to chat with Robert Grillo. In this podcast we spoke about Fairlife, a subsidiary of the Coca-Cola company, and the biggest “humane” dairy label in U.S. that has been exposed for routine abuse. Recently animal activists protested against James Quincey, the Chairman and CEO, of the Coca-Cola Company who was being honored at an NYC event with the CARE Impact Award for Corporate Leadership. I hope you will take the time to listen about this as well as a discussion on the importance of grassroots activism.
As you can see we cover a wide range of topics that involve food. Some topics we talk about are troubling and we encourage a call to action. Other times we talk about delicious and fun foods, like cookies! Who doesn’t love cookies? Coming up this Tuesday, November 28, tune in to hear my interview with Rey Orteqa, a.k.a. the Mad Cookie Man!, who is a pioneer in the plant-based sector and the founder of Sun Flour Baking Company.
