I get asked all the time why I do what I do. And my answer is always the same— I do it for the animals. I’m sure many of you have seen the film, Wicked. I found the message about the animals losing their voices to be very powerful and inspiring. As a vegan for 36 years, I started the IT’S ALL ABOUT FOOD podcast on the Progressive Radio Network in 2009 to give a voice to the voiceless. My mission has always been to inform my listeners about why the vegan lifestyle is so important and essential in stopping animal cruelty. This podcast is a labor of love and I expect nothing in return. I will admit, however, that it is nice every now and then to be recognized for this important work. Thank you to Feedspot for including the IT’S ALL ABOUT FOOD PODCAST in their list of TOP 70 FOOD PODCASTS. And that’s ALL food podcasts, not just the vegan ones.

2024 HIGHLIGHTS FROM IT’S ALL ABOUT FOOD, THE REAL PODCAST It’s always hard to choose which podcasts I have enjoyed most throughout the year. I love them all. Here is my “best of IT’S ALL ABOUT FOOD” list for 2024. We often talk about what’s wrong with animal agriculture. It’s bad for the environment, eating animals increases our risk of having chronic diseases, and most importantly, it’s cruel to the animals. I love speaking with Ellie Laks and talking about her Gentle Barn sanctuaries. I found her latest book Cow Hug Therapy so moving. There is so much we can learn from cows if we took the time to get to know them, and hug them! Ellie describes in her book how cow hugs have healing powers. This was confirmed by Gregory Berns in another book featured on the podcast called Cowpuppy. We love featuring art in all forms. Ruby Roth was one of my first guests on the podcast years ago. She wrote and illustrated children’s books, including, That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals, V is for Vegan, The ABCs of Being Kind, and, Vegan Is Love. We began the year with Ruby’s new book, for grownups this time, entitled Boss Inside, A Reclamation of the Feminine, a powerful, intimate narrative and collection of artwork. Film is also an important medium for activism. Emma Schwarz spoke to me about the exciting films featured at the International Vegan Film Festival. While we primarily talk about food on the podcast, we sometimes include subjects that are important to well-being like sleep. Author Annabel Abbs-Streets and I had a lively conversation about her book Sleepless, which gives us a unique and nonjudgmental perspective on how, when, where and for how long we sleep and have slept over the centuries. You may find it’s been more difficult to sleep lately because of all the crises going on around the globe. Like Bird Flu for example. We’ve been talking about Bird Flu for many years, ever since Michael Greger wrote his book Bird Flu: A Virus of Our Own Hatching in 2006. Although it seems to be getting more attention now that many cow herds are infected, serious action is not being taken. My friend Robert Grillo from Free From Harm and I spoke about this in the podcast entitled, End USDA’s Bird Flu Bailouts. How do we solve the problems we humans have created? It often helps to learn about how we got to where we are in order to repair the damage done and move forward in a positive direction. I spoke with Bill Hatcher about his new book, The Red Planet, Gendered Landscapes and Violent Inequalities which covers just that – how we got to where we are today over thousands of years of cultural change. There are many people today trying to solve the world’s problems. I loved reading The Problem with Solutions and speaking with the author, Julie Guthman about this. She covers what many considered solutions that ended up not solving targeted problems, and often made things worse. She also offers strategies to understand problems and work with the affected communities to move forward. I was delighted to speak with one of my favorite medical doctors, Joel Fuhrman, MD, about Heart Health, Vaccines, Supplements, Emotional Well-Being. I have always appreciated doctors that incorporate plant-based nutrition into their practice and who know how to cook and prepare meals. Dr. Fuhrman is in that small but growing group along with Ron Weiss, MD. I spoke with Dr. Weiss about his Ethos Primary Care and Ethos Farm. He’s is a farmer as well as a medical doctor! There are so many vegan cookbooks today. That’s a good thing. I don’t feature as many cookbooks authors as I used to on the podcast but these were two I was happy to talk about: Big Vegan Flavor, by Nisha Vora, and The Vibrant Hong Kong Table by Christine Wong. I knew Big Vegan Flavor was special when I reviewed it, and it went on to become an instant New York Times bestseller and was named a Best Cookbook of 2024 by NPR, VegNews, and The Portland Press Herald. Tune in to the podcast to hear why this book is a winner. Christine’s book is also very special with delicious vegan recipes based on traditional Hong Kong favorites along with delightful stories and fascinating history. |
