Wenonah Hauter is the Executive Director of Food & Water Watch. She has worked extensively on food, water, energy, and environmental issues at the national, state and local level. Her book Foodopoly: The Battle Over the Future of Food and Farming in America examines the corporate consolidation and control over our food system and what it means for farmers and consumers.
When she was 11, Wenonah’s father bought a hardscrabble farm in the Bull Run Mountains of Virginia. There she developed an appreciation for what it really means to grow food — she picked potato bugs, plucked chickens and chopped kindling.
Today, Wenonah is experienced in developing policy positions and legislative strategies, she is also a skilled and accomplished organizer, having lobbied and developed grassroots field strategy and action plans. From 1997 to 2005 she served as Director of Public Citizen’s Energy and Environment Program, which focused on water, food, and energy policy. From 1996 to 1997, she was environmental policy director for Citizen Action, where she worked with the organization’s 30 state-based groups. From 1989 to 1995 she was at the Union of Concerned Scientists where as a senior organizer, she coordinated broad-based, grassroots sustainable energy campaigns in several states. She has an M.S. in Applied Anthropology from the University of Maryland.

Hello everyone. I am Caryn Hartglass. Welcome. Thank you for joining me and thank you for tuning in. It’s time for It’s All About Food. That’s the name of this program. You know that and as I always say, it is all about food, everything is. If you connect the dots you realize food is somewhere in that picture and we’re going to be talking a lot about that today especially connecting the dots. I wanted to take a moment as I am feeling really grateful right now. I’m sitting in my home. I have a roof over my head. I am drinking this lovely, organic, fair trade, vanilla black tea. It’s really delicious and I finished a salad with a bunch of fresh broccoli sprouts that I grew myself and I’m thinking “everything is good and I’m happy for the choices that I am making for myself, nourishing myself and making choices that are gentle on the planet, but I can’t just sit and enjoy it too much because there is too much work to be done. Let’s just jump right into that. There are so many things going on with our food and we can’t sit back, well, maybe for a moment we can sit back, but then we have to get recharged and jump right back in. We’re going to be talking about a new book. You must all grab it and read it cover to cover. Foodopoly by Wenonah Hauter. She is the Executive Director of Food And Water Watch. She has worked extensively on food, water, energy, and environmental issues at the national, state, and local level. Wenonah Hauter: I am so glad to be here.
Caryn Hartglass: Well thank you for writing this book. I have a lot of things to say about it. First of all, it was difficult reading because there are just so many terrible things that are going on all the time and I felt in some ways it was a walk down memory lane because you cover quite a bit of history about our food system and I remember so many of the things that have happened in the last three decades, protests I went to, petitions I signed, and a lot of those things didn’t make it or pass and we didn’t get what we wanted. So I take a big sigh and say “Let’s keep going.” Let’s talk about all of those things and what we’re going to do about it.
Wenonah Hauter: Well that’s right because I think that’s one of the reasons that I wrote Foodopoly. We really have to build the political power to have the kind of food system that we want and actually that we claim in our democracy and I think that the two go together.
Caryn Hartglass: Absolutely. I want to believe that this is a good time. I think it was a lot harder to get information about before but with the internet it is so much easier and more people are looking for it for lots of reasons. A lot of people’s health is failing and they are having allergies and all kinds of problems and there is something I think inside of us intuitively, at least in some of us that say “Something is not right.”
Wenonah Hauter: I think that you are exactly right. This is a turning point and there are so many people interested and excited about food and food issues and good food and it’s great for them and for all of us to vote with our forks and now we’ve got to get everyone to vote with their votes. We’ve got to get politically active.
Caryn Hartglass: I want to get into some of the details of your book but first I just want to summarize what I got from it. It seems like there are, as I see it, three major things that are going on. There are what we are all doing as individuals and the choices that we make, there is what is going on with corporations at the government level, and then where they’ve got all of the power and they are making all of the choices and then there is this advertising and media that is informing the individual. The individual then makes choices that support what the corporations are doing and it’s this cyclical mess because many individuals are not informed properly and they are kind of lulled into supporting what is going on.
Wenonah Hauter: I think that is a good way of looking at it. Basically, we have allowed companies, and in this case, food companies, to become so large that they have the political and economic power to both develop the kinds of foods that are profitable to change public policy to benefit their business, and to basically dictate all of the rules around food policy, whether it is labeling or whether we eat genetically engineered food or any of the other things that they are basically influencing our government to do. There are basically twenty companies that are the owners of most of the brands that we see in the grocery stores. They have hired food scientists to figure out how to… (inaudible)… to junk food and then they have basically dictated the policies to congress, to the Executive Branch and to the federal agencies. Then we have the big grocery stores like Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart gets 1 out of 3 grocery dollars so they have a tremendous amount of political power as well and economic power. They actually have a lot of power over the food processors.
Caryn Hartglass: The whole story that you tell, as I mentioned before, it’s so hard to read and believe it’s going on. As I understand it, these corporations work really hard at minimizing their costs at the expense of everyone below them. As you describe in Wal-Mart, the people that supply the food, those smaller companies or individuals are required to upgrade and bear the costs of the upgrades themselves when it ultimately only really benefits Wal-Mart and they profit from it and they are just squeezing whatever they can out of everyone. They profit and everyone else is just barely treading water.
Wenonah Hauter: I think that is exactly right. What was most interesting to me in researching and writing Foodopoly was that this has been a long term plan in creating this kind of food system. There were business leaders after WWII who really saw what they believed was an opportunity to substitute chemicals and capital for labor on the farm and they formed a business association that was very powerful and they began to chip away at the new deal policies that allowed farmers to make a living and for real food to be grown. Part of the reason that I wrote Foodopoly is that I think a lot of blame is put on farmers for the kind of food system that we have. The way I see it, farmers are victims as much as consumers, even those small and mid-size farmers that are growing commodity crops are locked into the system. It is shocking when you find out that the average small and mid-size farmer makes just over $19,000 and that is with the government subsidy and these are people that are just barely making it. We need these farmers and rural individuals to be our allies in recreating the food system because we need these smaller and mid-size farms to transition into a new kind of food system. Plus, they live in the places where the agriculture committees tend to get the members who vote on these important pieces of legislation like the farm bill, which should be called the food bill, so it’s very important that we engage them and don’t just demonize them.
Caryn Hartglass: It’s interesting that you just said the word demonize because I want to talk about the Devil. I’m not a religious person and I can’t say that I believe in God or the Devil. I keep thinking how it just seems that so many people have sold their souls to the Devil.
Wenonah Hauter: And the Devil is in the details of our food system, right?
Caryn Hartglass: Absolutely and when I read every story in your book about different politicians or different corporate leaders literally selling their soul and making decisions or not allowing a case to go to court or having the Supreme Court decide that they are not going to hear a case, or just ruling one way that is totally ludicrous, it’s like they are all selling their souls to the Devil.
Wenonah Hauter: Yes. They are. They are selling their souls to the Almighty Dollar.
Caryn Hartglass: The Dollar, which is the devil.
Wenonah Hauter: I think what I wanted to do with Foodopoly was to untangle some of these policies but also to give people hope because we do need to rebuild our democracy and I think that is what it is going to take to finally really fix our food system. I think that food brings people to these issues and we need to start demanding that our government do things that benefit people. One of the takeaways from the book is that the consolidation that continues to happen. Under the Reagan administration, anti-trust law was eviscerated so we have this economic system that is supposed to be built on competition, but all public policy is directed at allowing acquisitions and mergers and not just in food, in every line of business. I wanted to reintroduce this issue in the context of food because I think one of the things that we need to do is start telling our elected officials that the Federal Trade Commission actually needs to do its job and we actually need Congress to look at mergers and acquisitions in the food industry. There is another big merger coming down and I bet most people don’t even know that it is happening. It’s ConAgra and Ralcorp. These are processed food companies.
Caryn Hartglass: Of course ConAgra needs to be bigger!
Wenonah Hauter: Right! Bigger. A real behemoth! We need to stop these mergers and acquisitions because the bigger these companies get, the more power they have and I think just to get this discussion out there and to start talking about how we want real competition, we want a marketplace that works for farmers and consumers, is part of what we need to change the consciousness.
Caryn Hartglass: I agree with you that it is important to give everyone hope and I want to talk more about what it is that we can do as individuals and it does come down to democracy. Right now we have, as you mention in your book, a number of different organizations within the government and most of them are underfunded, don’t have the resources, and there are actual regulations in the books that they cannot enforce. It is extremely frustrating and yet we all pay taxes and wonder where they are going to if they are not going to what we want. What should we do?
Wenonah Hauter: The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for overseeing the safety of most foods except for meat products and eggs and they are a terribly underfunded agency. We do have a new law that the rules are beginning to be written for the Food Safety Modernization Act so there will be some changes. Some of them will be beneficial and there will be more regulation of processed food. It won’t do some of the things that really need to be done like really step up the inspection of imported foods because the agency won’t have the funding for what needs to be done or enough inspectors to do it. I think that is one of the things that people are very surprised about, to know that really large percentages of our food, even organic food, production has been offshored. That has been one of the things that people can really stay on top of when you’re looking to buy products. You know, we really can’t ensure what kind of production methods are being used for organics in China. We have to go a lot on faith in this country to ensure that verification is working. So I think one of the things that people will be able to do and get involved in is maintaining the integrity of the organic standards. Some of the big companies, the top 20 food companies that control conventional foods, 14 of those are the biggest companies in organics and they have tried to weaken organic standards. I think that is one thing that people can start demanding to the USDA and the organics board that oversees this. That is one of the things that we watched and we plan when these meetings are held to let people know what is coming down the pike so that they can advocate because we need to maintain the standards of organics.
Caryn Hartglass: So what does that mean? We can go to your website and we can campaign, or a letter we can write?
Wenonah Hauter: It means that when the Organics Board is considering, in their meetings, a change to the organic standards, that is something we follow at Food and Water Watch and we notify people about. Another important issue that is going on right now that people can really play a part in is the genetically engineered salmon. I know that you and your listeners have probably been following this. We are actually pleased that we have held it off as long as we collectively have. Now there is a 60 day comment period. It is really important that as many people as possible come into the FDA and say that the assessment that they have done, basically the company that wants to raise the eggs for genetically engineered salmon, studies that they have done and the assessment, it’s inadequate and we want people to comment to the FDA and you can go to the Food and Water Watch site where you can make your comment. I think one of the biggest issues that people are really getting involved in is labeling genetically engineered food. Since we’re having a lot more genetically engineered products come into the marketplace, it’s really important that we work towards labeling. I think this is something that people are very concerned about. Some of these state bills to label genetically engineered food are going to get some traction this year. We know that it was a big disappointment that California initiative failed but there is another big initiative in Washington State and I know several of us will go back, several organizations will go back and fight for legislation in California. I think this is just an issue whose time has come.
Caryn Hartglass: Absolutely. The time has come. I guess the good thing about the proposition that didn’t pass in California is that it was an opportunity for the information to get out to more people and more people are aware of what is going on so it’s just a matter of time.
Wenonah Hauter: That’s exactly right. A lot of people are educated about the issue now and so we need to build on that to do something in the future.
Caryn Hartglass: The scary thing for me about genetically modified food is that I am not convinced that it is safe because the testing has been insufficient, if there has even been any long term testing-I don’t think so. It is really hard to determine whether one food or another food is the cause of one particular problem but the scariest thing is that a small number of companies want to get control of our food supply, right down to the seed. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the musical “Urinetown” but I like the arts. I remember when I first saw it and I don’t know if everyone got the real point behind it. Basically in the story people had to pay in order to urinate and it was taxed and controlled by the government. The point is, that these companies, if we let them, will control as much of what is out there as possible-the food, the air, the water, our lives-if we let them.
Wenonah Hauter: That’s exactly right. We all know Monsanto’s role in promoting genetically engineered seeds and then the herbicides that the seeds are designed to resist and this has increased the use of herbicides and today, Monsanto controls the genetic material for 90% of soy seeds and 80% of corn. These are genetically engineered seeds, but there has also been massive consolidation of the seed industry so all seeds are more expensive and there is control by just a handful of companies. This is a real concern here in the US and you can imagine for the developing world where people save seeds what this means. It’s a really draconian plot.
Caryn Hartglass: I think a lot of the problems started when humans were first created but we could look at industrialization. Problems started there and after World War II a lot of things took hold in terms of corporations starting to use chemicals and get more control of our food supply, but at the same time, some good things have happened, haven’t they?
Wenonah Hauter: Oh absolutely! I am old enough to remember when the only lettuce you could find in the store was iceberg. I think there is a lot of awareness about our food system and I think that the growing food movement is especially exciting and the interest in local food and I think there is a lot of tremendous growth of interest in the things that are making people overweight and sicker. So that is a real plus and now we just need to engage those people more in the politics of food. The way I look at these things is this is something that every generation has to get involved in. Humanity has its ups and downs and we’ve had some real downs in recent times, but I think there is a big opportunity to change the way we live and to be more sustainable and to do that, people have to know what’s wrong and they have to get engaged in changing it in your own life and then having collective action to change it as well. I am very hopeful and I see all of these young people who are just so inspired and who want to go out and farm and do political work and that’s what we want to do is raise another generation of well-educated and mobilized young people.
Caryn Hartglass: We definitely need more small farmers to get back into the business but it has to be supported and it has to be sustainable and they have to be able to make a living doing it. That is certainly what needs to change. I’m not a believer that one person can change the world and I’m not expecting that President Obama can make huge changes, but now that he’s in his second term and he doesn’t have to worry about being re-elected, do you think he’ll get a little tougher?
Wenonah Hauter: I’m a little concerned that he won’t. First of all, as far as the biotech industry, the Obama administration has legalized more bio-tech crops than even the Bush administration. I think that the only way President Obama will do what he should do on any issue is if we make him do it. You know what I mean? He has actually said that we need to make him do these things. So we need to create a public outcry, which is what we are trying to do on the genetically engineered salmon, and demand that he do the right thing. And when those demands are made, we have a much better opportunity to get him to do what he should do. I think that there are some things in the next four years that he could do to improve the food system. He could reopen the debate at the USDA about the consolidation in the livestock market. He promised to do this because family farmers have no fair market to sell into. You have these big companies, the meat packers, the Tysons, the Purdues, the JBS’ that control the market for animals so family farmers just don’t have a chance. He said that he would investigate this and do something about it and he chickened out so I think that is something that we could raise with the Obama administration again. I think that we have to take these baby steps to get to where we need to be. I think that the genetic engineering and making a fair marketplace for smaller farmers who want to raise livestock; those are a couple of the places that we can do something.
Caryn Hartglass: You say a number of times throughout the book that we should eliminate factory farming, or at least I put that into my words. It’s a horrific thing and I’ve been saying it for years. It just needs to go away. It’s probably one of the worst, if not the worst creation that humans have conceived of and it’s horrible to the animals which is what gets to me the most personally. It’s devastating on the environment and the products that come out of it are not healthy for humans and then there are the contamination issues, e. coli, salmonella, and the antibiotic problem where we won’t be able to use antibiotics at some point because they are becoming super bugs. All of these things are really horrible. I’d like to put it out there that factory farming needs to go away.
Wenonah Hauter: Absolutely. Factory farming needs to go away and I think that if most Americans knew how their meat was raised and processed, that they wouldn’t eat it so that’s part of what we try to do at Food and Water Watch, is get that story out there.
Caryn Hartglass: People started screaming about pink slime and that is the tip of the iceberg. They have no idea what is really going on with their food. I got into food personally because I didn’t want to kill animals. I was a teenager and I just realized that what was on my plate was a dead animal and that just opened the door for me to learn so much more. I’m wondering since you know all of this stuff about food and where it comes from where do you get your food?
Wenonah Hauter: Well, first of all, I inherited a farm and my husband works that farm as a community supported agriculture product in the summer. So in the summer I get a lot of food from the farm. I still actually as recreation can and freeze things like tomatoes and blueberries. In fact, I had some frozen blueberries this morning from my garden and as far as in the winter and getting foods to eat during these months, I try to get organic food. I, like most people, am forced to go to the giant natural food stores like Whole Foods which is interesting because they have a strangle hold on the market and I don’t live near a food coop. I think that one of the things that we all need to do is to try and eat as many fruits and vegetables so if you don’t have access to a store when you can get organics, you can still try to eat as much from the outside of the grocery store rather than the inside and all of that processed food.
Caryn Hartglass: Well I am envious that you have access to your own food. It’s kind of a romantic notion that many of us have to farm but I really want to see more people get back to it and have it supported by the community because it is so, so necessary. Wenonah, thank you for joining me on It’s All About Food and I wish you the best of luck with this book. Caryn Hartglass: Okay, we’re back. I’m Caryn Hartglass and you’re listening to It’s All About Food. And I want to continue connecting the dots. We were connecting the dots before with how the corporations connect our food choices. We think we have freedom to purchase the things we want but there’s so many things going on behind the scene that we need to pay attention to. And it’s all about connecting the dots. Now, we’re going to talk a little differently about connecting the dots. And I’m really looking forward to this next half hour. One of the things we’ve been doing at the Progressive Radio Network is working with other hosts on the show. And it’s been fun for me because I get to learn about other great hosts on this network, all the great work that they’re doing. One of them is our next guest, Meria Heller, who is, in addition to being a PRN host of the Meria Heller Show, she’s an American writer, speaker, and Reiki master and a lot more. And I’m just going to bring her right on right now.

Meria Heller: My pleasure. Thanks for having me on, Caryn.
Caryn Hartglass: Oh, Gosh! I’m so glad to have you on because I want to know more about this universal wheel and what you’ve been doing and how we can understand, I guess, all life on Earth.
Meria Heller: Well, there’s a loaded question!
Caryn Hartglass: Much for a half hour!
Meria Heller: Well, many years ago I met a very wonderful teacher. His name was Sun Bear and he taught a Native American medicine wheel. I studied with him and I got totally involved in it and the philosophy of it and developed what I called the universal medicine wheel, which eliminates any barriers as far as your ethnicity, your sexual orientation, your religion, et cetera, etcetera. So that people can truly understand that all life is connected and that we’re a part of it and we all depend on each other and every living thing for our own web of life.
On my own radio show at meria.net, I talk about a lot of political things going on but it’s all connected to the same message: we either learn to live in a sacred manner or we perish as humans.
Caryn Hartglass: Yeah, I love that. And unfortunately, we’re seeing a lot of degradation today because many of us are not living in a sacred manner. We’re taking so many things for granted for the sake of convenience and comfort without really considering all the repercussions.
Meria Heller: I think one of the areas we are at least living in a sacred life is our own personal life. And that’s where change begins, with your personal life and your personal choices. I heard a little of your show and it talked about our food choices. Well, our food choices are the most important thing. That’s really pretty much the only vote we have left so if we’re buying processed food and eating animal products, we’re voting for the torture and slaughter and murder of innocent animals. Even though someone else is murdering them for you, you’re taking that polluted, tortured energy into your body. So how sacred is your temple? How sacred are you treating your own body?
I’ve been myself, as a personal choice, an organic vegetarian for thirteen years now.
Caryn Hartglass: Woohoo! Bravo! Thank you!
Meria Heller: I feel really good about the fact that nothing has to die for me to eat. And even when you do take your vegetables, your fruits, you also need to take them in a sacred manner because they too have a living force, obviously the best living force for the physical human body. Say a prayer over it, Reiki-ing your food, appreciating it, is very important.
Caryn Hartglass: Can you just tell me what you just said, Reiki-ing your food? What does that mean?
Meria Heller: Well, a lot of people have chosen to become Reiki practitioners. Reiki is a hands-on healing technique. It’s a very old technique. I am a Reiki master. So once you’ve attuned to that energy, all you need do is put your hands over your food to purify it. I just keep telling people, back in the older days people used to pray before they ate. Today, you need to pray before you eat because you don’t know what’s in the food.
Caryn Hartglass: And it may sound a little out there, just to put your hands over food. But I want to tell you my own brief experience with Reiki. And I know that there are a lot of people that study it and just like any field, there are some people that are amazing at it and some people who probably shouldn’t be practicing and need to do a lot more work. But I had one experience when I knew absolutely nothing about Reiki, did not know what to expect. I met someone who said he would just show me a little bit. And I lie down and I didn’t really…I had no idea what he was going to do. I closed my eyes. I was relaxed and all of a sudden, I felt this surge of energy, from my temples to my toes. I opened my eyes, almost in a panic, because I didn’t know…I thought it might have been some sort of massage like other kinds of Swedish massage or something. I didn’t know what it was. And I opened my eyes and said, “What are you doing?” And he had his hands raised above my body, maybe a foot or more. He had incredible control of energy and I felt it instantly. And I’m sure there are lots of different ways to manifest it in people, have different…have their own styles. But I was an instant believer in the power of this energy transfer.
Meria Heller: Well, half the word Reiki is ki and everybody has ki energy, that’s what your body existing, that’s what keeps you alive, that’s your living energy. A true Reiki practitioner never has to touch you in order for you to benefit from that energy as they channel it to you.
Caryn Hartglass: Well, it’s amazing and I’m a believer.
Meria Heller: Well, good. But you know, you’re not a Reiki practitioner if you’re into healing arts in any way. It’s always a good idea to say a little prayer or put your energy into the food. Thank the food for giving its life force to you.
Caryn Hartglass: Now, is there anything specific other than putting your hands over the food and saying it to…?
Meria Heller: Well, you want to eat clean food. You want to drink clean water. That’s urgent in a day where … I just got a news story today that the FDA has found that a lot of food that they’re selling us is fake food. It isn’t what they tell us it is: everything from olive oil to lemon juice to pomegranate. So you have to become a wise consumer whether you wanted to know about these things or not. You need to know or you’re going to end up sick with illness, which will then send you over to the other half of the food production company, which is the pharmaceutical company. People have to understand that the same people that own the big food companies own the big pharmaceutical companies and the diet centers.
Caryn Hartglass: One thing I’ve learned in this book that I was just talking about, Foodopoly, she just has a number of great diagrams in this book that show how all the bad guys are connected.
Meria Heller: Absolutely. I had interviewed Kevin Trudeau a while ago on his…one of his latest books and he makes the connection. He names names. You can’t afford… we’re not eating the kinds of food our grandparents ate, when people say, “Oh, my grandparents ate meat until they were ninety and they died,” and I’m like, “We’re not eating the same food that they had then.” Everything today is bastardized.
Caryn Hartglass: I mean I don’t recommend eating meat but the meat today is not the same as it was in days in the days of yore.
Meria Heller: No, no. And I strongly suggest people stay away from any kind of animal products, including dairy, because all of it is polluted.
Caryn Hartglass: You started in the beginning saying that what we can do is eat fruits and vegetables and vote with our fork. I really believe in that but I’m starting to believe that although it’s very significant to do that, it’s not enough. And we need to be writing letters to our officials to make it clear what we want.
Meria Heller: Absolutely. But look at the hard time we have: even when we had the referendum on the California ballot to get Monsanto to label their genetically modified food, Monsanto’s money won out. Even though there were laws on the books to label our food since 1995, they still have not put the labeling on our food and that’s a lot of lobbyists’ money. We wait for people to continuing to lobby organic consumerism and people like that but the bottom line is, by the time that happens, you could be deathly sick.
Caryn Hartglass: I know. I had my own personal romp with illness and I got out of it, fortunately. That’s a whole another story. One of the things that I did was, not only was I already on the vegan diet, but I started to juice. And I believe you recently got into juicing yourself?
Meria Heller: Yes, I did. All of a sudden last weekend, I got hit with some killer migraines. I haven’t had those for several years because I do also weight training six days a week. And I want your audience to know I’m over sixty.
Caryn Heller: Woohoo! Right On!
Meria Heller: And my last physical six months ago, I would put my results up against anybody in their 20s. The body needs a few things: it needs clean food, clean water, good sleep, and exercise. It’s not that difficult.
Caryn Hartglass: Yup, that’s about it. People seem to understand that, when it comes to fancy cars that they need to take care of them, put in really high-quality fuel, and do maintenance on them and keep them in tune. But we don’t think about that when it comes to our bodies.
Meria Heller: Well, I also think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we’ve been taught against trusting our intuition. And a classic example is when I started feeling sick I said, “How is this possible? I’m the healthiest person I know.” And a little voice inside my head said, “Juicing.” Well, I immediately started juicing the next day.
Caryn Hartglass: Well, I’m a big believer in juicing. And there’s all kinds of discussions about what it’s good for and when it’s good. So many information I don’t agree with out there but I know it’s really helped me and I’m really committed to it.
But let’s talk about listening to that little voice and how we can tune into it and know that it’s the right message.
Meria Heller: You have to learn how to trust it. Once you see that it’s right most times, you’re going to learn to trust it. And the way to hear it is to just be quiet. So many people, their problem is that their mind never shuts off. Do whatever it takes to get into a form of meditation, whether it’s listening to classical music, or sitting down and writing, or working in your garden, whatever keeps you totally focused on what you’re doing. Concentration is meditation. And then all of a sudden, you get these great eureka ideas. You’re like, “Wow, why didn’t I think of that before?” You did, but you weren’t listening.
Caryn Hartglass: Yeah, I think that’s really, really important and something that we all need to learn how to do because we know it all. We really do. And a lot of people think they know it all; they don’t know anything. But internally, deep inside, we do know so much.
Meria Heller: Well, yeah. But everything in the world is set up to seduce you into all the wrong decisions. You sit in front of the T. V., you can sit in front of it for an hour, you’re going to see fifteen different ads for either some new fast food garbage, or some new pharmaceutical convincing you that there’s a new disease out there and you have it. So people have to start being discerning and then just walk away from that and start doing some work on your own, start reading the right books, the books you tout on your show. One movie I’d love to share with your listeners is called “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead.” I’ve watched that several time now and I think everybody should watch that movie because… And when you see the results of juicing on some pretty serious cases, I think it’s very convincing.
Caryn Hartglass: It is, but what people need… I think some people get confused because they use juicing as a temporary fix without changing their bad habits, where they use it for weight loss without changing their habits and then when they stop juicing, they go back to their old habits and then there’s a roller coaster and that’s a serious problem. But that movie really was powerful and it was real, especially the second part where a new character is introduced into the film, which wasn’t really expected when they started creating the film.
Meria Heller. Right, right. But the best thing about juicing is it’s a great detox: you don’t have to do it for your whole life; you don’t have to do it for three meals a day. It’s a wonderful way to get you used to eating real food so it’s a very good bridge to becoming a vegetarian because you do lose the taste for all the garbage that they have out there. I mean, the three seductive tastes in most restaurants are fat, salt, and sugar.
Caryn Hartglass: Yup. SOS: sugar, oil, salt.
Meria Heller: Exactly.
Caryn Hartglass: There’s one cookbook that I like from the True North Health Center. Alan Goldhamer has a sous chef there, Ramses Bravo and they put out the Bravo! cookbook and they promote SOS-free food, free of sugar, oil, salt.
You put out a book list. I found it when I was preparing for this show of books you recommended from 2000-2010. And I’m really glad that I found it because there are only really about five books on that list that I’ve actually read, and so many more that I haven’t.
Meria Heller: Right. A lot of those books are they were all people I’ve interviewed and now, since I changed the format the new […] I interviewed are just…I have a copy of the book within the archive of the book. One of the most excellent books, especially if people want to be in a true spiritual journey is the World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle.
Caryn Hartglass: Amen, amen, amen.
Meria Heller: He was one of the most courageous writers and the only vegetarian writer to make the connection between the energy of those tortured animals and what does that do inside your body. And I think that’s why so many people are so angry and depressed all the time. And they don’t make the connection: we’re connected to all living things.
Caryn Hartglass: When you realize that you can thrive…when you can live and thrive without consuming animals and you break away from it, you feel very different and some of it isn’t explainable but I think it could be something like what you’re talking about: when you stop consuming the fear, the frustration, the confusion of other animals.
Meria Heller: Well, just think of the life of torture that they have in these […] that Mercy for Animals does a great job of exposing. And the last thought in that poor animal’s mind is fear and terror. Well, that’s what you’re eating: fear and terror. And when I had become a vegan, it’s kind of interesting because I come from an Italian background and vegans are not exactly big there, but we don’t really eat that much meat either. But my daughter and I used to always get into these arguments and it would escalate, like crazy Italians. And once I became a vegetarian she said, “Mom, you’re no longer fun to argue with.”
Caryn Hartglass: That is funny!
Meria Heller: So she noticed it and it made me take pause and I said, “What’s the difference? Why do I have this inner peace?” One of my friends recently accused me of being the fifth element. You might say the fifth element because even though you have stress like everybody else in your life and situations are going on, you never lose your inner peace. Well, I have to attribute it to the fact that I’m not eating terror.
Caryn Hartglass: Yeah. I am not comfortable with arguing; I don’t like it. I don’t mind confrontation where I can bring up some points where things aren’t right but I don’t like arguing. I like to stay in this place of peace. It feels so much better.
Meria Heller: Absolutely. I mean, you sleep well at night and life is a beautiful thing. And I never try to force my lifestyle on anyone else. But when people look at me and say, “What do you do to look like this? What do you do to stay this healthy? What do you do to stay so even keeled?” then I will tell them. But it’s a matter of making a commitment to yourself and realizing your body is your computer.
Caryn Hartglass: But how did you make that decision, to go vegetarian and vegan?
Meria Heller: Well, for me, I’ve dragged it out for so many years. I was going to Tahiti once and I was reading John Robbins’ last book, I think it was The Food Revolution. And I realized I could no longer make any excuses. You can’t be … you can’t claim to be an environmentalist and eat animals.
Caryn Hartglass: Oh, but please, they all do! So many do.
Meria Heller: I understand. I understand and I’ve dropped subscriptions to a lot of environmental magazines because they have recipes in there for animals. And it really is true. So I decided that I wasn’t…I couldn’t make the same excuses. Believe me, I made the same excuses everyone else does. And the bonus was, two years into being a vegetarian, my thyroid repaired itself and I no longer had to be on thyroid medication.
Caryn Hartglass: Oh, good for you.
Meria Heller: So I’ve seen the physical changes in my body as a result of my choices. I’m not going to force that on anyone else but if they’re walking around and they’re 300-400 pounds, and they’re in their 30s and they’re on all kinds of prescriptions, they need to look at “You truly are what you eat.”
Caryn Hartglass: I know. It’s really heart wrenching. You probably know that there’s a lot to it to this whole obesity scenario. I really believe that food can fix it but we’re learning so many different things about all the artificial chemicals that are in the environment, in plastics and in the can liners, the endocrine disruptors, that actually encourage us to get fat, that some of it is out of our control, to some degree.
Meria Heller: Well, it’s out of your control if you let it be. People can make that choice: “I’m not going to eat processed food.” When I go to the supermarket it’s very easy. I only hit the fruits and vegetables and I’m gone.
Caryn Hartglass: It’s funny. I don’t see anything else as food when I walk into a supermarket.
Meria Heller: I run away from the meat cases. I’ve been doing that for years because I could almost hear the screams coming out of that cage.
Caryn Hartglass: Yeah, I can hear them too. And it takes a certain amount of energy to turn that off because I wouldn’t be able to function and do anything productive if I let that frequency in.
Meria. Heller: Exactly. Well, think about the frequency of eating that.
Caryn Hartglass: Yeah. I don’t want to think about it! I don’t do it.
Meria Heller: Well, I’m talking to your audience because look, I’m just like everybody else, just a human being trying to figure it out as I go along. But after a while, you have to say, “Enough is enough.” And when you look at the deliberate poisoning of our food supply, which is deliberate. It’s all about money. You become lazy. You’re not interested in what your government is doing. You’re too busy eating like a slob and feeling like crap. Your mind’s not working and this how tyranny begins: when the people are so out of shape and so whipped by the end of the day that they don’t care about anything else, don’t care about the injustice going on around the world. They’re easy to control.
Caryn Hartglass: Do you think that is clearly intentional or just that they’re …?
Meria Heller: Oh yes. I no longer have any doubt. Years ago I wanted to live in La-la-land like most people but because of the research I’ve had to do for my show I think that it’s a deliberate … if you add in the poisoning of our air with chemicals, the poisoning in our food, the filth in our drinking water, no one should be drinking tap water, add vaccines and pharmaceuticals to that and you’ve got a perfect mix to control the people, control the population through lethargy, no empathy, just laziness, sloth, desperation, fear, you name it.
Caryn Hartglass: What are you drinking for water when you don’t drink tap water?
Meria Heller: Well, I first had started out with reverse osmosis system. And I live in the mountains of Arizona. We have pretty clean water but I still use a reverse osmosis system. And then I use a […] and water filter, which puts the minerals and vitamins you need in water back in the water.
Caryn Hartglass: Okay.
Meria Heller: If I’m at a friend’s house and I want some water, if their water’s not filtered there’s no way I’m drinking it. I also have filters on my showerheads because don’t forget, when you’re taking a shower your skin is absorbing all that chlorine and who knows what else is in it.
Caryn Hartglass: Fluorine. Fluoride.
Meria Heller: Right, fluoride and all the rest of the mind numbing drugs. So some people will say, “That’s kind of fanatical,” but my bottom line is: who’s healthy and who isn’t?
Caryn Hartglass: Absolutely. I totally agree with you. When you’re used to drinking clean water and you’re out somewhere in a restaurant or in someone’s home and they pour you a glass, I smell it before I could even drink it and I think, “No, no, no. I’m going to pass. I can wait.”
Meria Heller: If you can smell it and has a color, don’t drink it.
Caryn Hartglass: Okay, we have two minutes so tell me something inspiring, something good. I always like to leave on a happy, delicious note.
Meria Heller: Well, the good thing is, I think, more people… and what I’m finding, because I also do private counseling work, is a lot of twenty-year olds and younger are totally aware so I think that a lot of the work our generation has done, and I really don’t know what generation you fit in to, is getting through. But young people are getting it on so many levels and that’s one of the best sights that I’ve seen in my entire life, is that all good work is paying off.
