What Vegans Eat – Day 488: Special Travel Edition

Breakfast: Whenever we are in the Bay Area we have to get to Hobbee’s. This restaurant has been around since the mid-70s and I have been long-time loyal fan. Their menu was pretty evolved when I first discovered it in the mid-80s, serving tofu scramble and soy milk. But it hasn’t evolved much since. I would think by now there would be more vegan items on the menu. They do have a great oatmeal bar in the morning followed by a nice salad bar. We were meeting my old friend of 48 years, Mike. Gary and I both got the Tofu Scramble along with Hobee’s Tea. Recently I started ordering it without the Cumin Spice Mix because it was too salty. But this time Gary’s scramble with the spice did not taste salty. Maybe they are evolving after all!

Daily Green Juice: At the Whole Foods in Los Gatos I typically order a Vasona green juice which is a bit heavy on the carrots. Somehow I got smart today and asked for it without carrots. It was super green and perfect!

Dinner: We were hanging out with our hosts – Gary’s brother Mark and sister-in-law Tammy and decided to make dinner and then watch the Tony’s. I was craving Nori and wanted to make maki. I didn’t have a bamboo rolling mat and made do with some parchment paper. I was surprised how well they came out – made with Quinoa mixed with Rice Vinegar and a sprinkle of sugar and topped with Sesame Seeds and Avocado. In the last roll, running out of Avocado I added some chopped Nectarines – a sweet surprise!

Gary baked up some Sweet Potatoes and oil-free Tofu Slices with Sesame Seeds, and he steamed some Kale and mixed Veggies. I made a Spinach Salad with Garden Tomatoes, Nectarines, Avocado and Rice Vinegar. It was a feast!
